Cash Settlement Available for Walmart Shoppers who Purchased Weighted Groceries

Attention Walmart shoppers! If you have purchased weighted groceries or bagged fruit at Walmart in recent years, you may be eligible for a cash payment. A class action lawsuit filed in October 2022 has alleged that Walmart shoppers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico who purchased certain sold-by-weight meat and seafood, as well as select citrus sold in bulk bags, paid more than the lowest price advertised in stores. Although Walmart has denied any wrongdoing, they have agreed to pay a staggering $45 million to settle the litigation.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company said, “We will continue providing our customers everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need. We still deny the allegations; however, we believe a settlement is in the best interest of both parties.” This settlement opens the door for impacted consumers to submit claims for cash payments.

To learn more about submitting a claim and to see which products are covered by the settlement, consumers can visit the settlement administrator’s website. Cash payments are available for anyone who purchased certain weighted meat, seafood, and bagged citrus products at Walmart in the U.S. and Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024. The eligible products include select oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines.

The amount of cash payment will vary depending on each claim. Even if you no longer have a purchase receipt, you can still receive compensation. Consumers without proof of purchase can receive between $10 and $25, depending on the number of eligible products they claim to have bought during the settlement class period. On the other hand, those with receipts or other documentation can receive 2% of the total cost for each product they purchased, with a maximum payout of $500.

Approved claimants will receive their payments electronically through Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or a virtual prepaid MasterCard. However, for individuals unable to receive electronic payments, paper checks can be requested. The deadline to submit a claim is June 5, with a final approval hearing scheduled for June 12. Objections and other comments regarding the settlement can be made until May 22.

This cash settlement presents an opportunity for Walmart shoppers who feel they may have been overcharged for certain weighted groceries to receive compensation. Whether you have a purchase receipt or not, it is worth exploring the possibility of submitting a claim. Walmart may have denied any wrongdoing, but this settlement signifies their willingness to address the concerns of their customers and reach a resolution. Don’t miss out on this chance to potentially recoup some of your hard-earned money. Act now and visit the settlement administrator’s website to see if you qualify. Remember, the deadline to submit a claim is June 5, so don’t delay!
