Police Warn Against Sharing Surveillance Footage of Package Theft in Quebec

Residents in the Canadian province of Quebec have been cautioned by the police not to post surveillance videos of their packages being stolen, as it could potentially violate the privacy of the alleged thieves. The warning comes as porch thefts, also known as “porch pirates,” become increasingly common, particularly during the holiday season.

Porch Theft Epidemic in Montreal West

Montreal West, known for its large porches, has become a prime target for thieves. According to CTV News Montreal videojournalist Olivia O’Malley, porch thefts are a daily occurrence in the area. Lauren Small-Pennefather, the Montreal West councilor responsible for public security, stated that thieves often follow delivery vehicles and seize packages left unattended on porches.

Privacy Concerns Raised by Local Police

Despite the rising porch theft incidents, the local police force, Sûreté du Québec (SQ), has advised citizens against sharing footage of alleged porch thieves. SQ communications officer Lt. Benoit Richard explained that posting such images could potentially violate the presumed innocence and privacy rights of individuals in Canada.

Legal Consequences for Sharing Security Footage

Individuals who choose to share security footage of their stolen packages may face potential defamation charges, as well as civil or criminal proceedings depending on the circumstances. The Civil Code of Québec, specifically articles 35 and 36, emphasize the right to reputation and privacy, stating that invasion of privacy without consent or legal authorization is prohibited.

Reporting Theft to the Police

Lt. Benoit Richard urged residents to report any evidence of theft to the police instead of sharing it publicly. The police will conduct investigations, bring the culprits to justice, and file appropriate charges.

Backlash and Criticism

The comments made by Lt. Benoit Richard regarding the potential legal consequences of sharing security footage have sparked backlash and disbelief among Canadians. Many individuals expressed frustration with law enforcement prioritizing the rights of criminals over those of victims. Journalist Ezra Levant criticized the police for their stance, while conservative commentator Chris Tomlinson accused them of disregarding theft incidents. Author and YouTube host Christina Hoff Sommers described the situation as madness.
