Monster Waves Batter California Coast as Powerful Storm Hits Pacific Ocean

Powerful storm in the Pacific Ocean caused monster waves to batter beach towns along the California coast on Thursday.

Coastal Flood Warnings and High Surf Warnings Issued

The National Weather Service issued Coastal Flood Warnings and High Surf Warnings for breaking waves between 28 and 33 feet from San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond San Francisco. Some locations were even forecasted to see waves as high as 40 feet.

Impact on Beaches and Coastal Areas

The massive waves overtook beaches and coastal roads, crashing against homes and businesses. The debris left behind was so heavy that road crews had to use plows to clear State Highway 1, south of San Francisco. Evacuation orders were issued for several northern and central California coastal communities.

Residents Shocked by the Size of the Waves

Residents expressed shock at the size of the waves, with many going to the beaches to capture pictures and videos. Some photographers in Capitola even screamed and ran as a monster wave approached.

Evacuation Notices and Safety Measures

Authorities implemented evacuation warnings and urged people to avoid the direct coastal area due to the powerful waves. Despite the warnings, some individuals ended up soaked.

Rescue Efforts and Damage

Ventura County rescue crews were busy with rescues and injury calls as waves damaged homes and swept onlookers off piers and beaches. In Ventura County, a wave topped the pier, estimated to be 20 feet high by the National Weather Service.

Future Swells and Warnings

Coastal Flood Warnings and High Surf Warnings in Northern California expired late Thursday and early Friday morning. However, the NWS warned that the next set of big swells will arrive on Saturday. Southern California warnings are in place through Saturday night. The worst flooding occurs at high tide.
