“Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular 2024: Gates Open to Excited Fans at Hatch Shell”

Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular Lights Up the Hatch Shell Oval

The gates to the Hatch Shell Oval on the Charles River Esplanade opened on Thursday afternoon, welcoming excited fans who quickly staked out their spots to view this year’s Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. Despite a cloudy morning with scattered rain showers, the skies cleared by noon, creating warm conditions for the attendees as they settled in for an eight-hour wait until showtime.

Musical performances for the 2024 Fireworks Spectacular are set to begin at 8 p.m. at the Hatch Shell, followed by the fireworks at 10:30 p.m. This year’s show marks the 50th anniversary since the addition of fireworks to Boston’s traditional Fourth of July concert. It promises powerhouse performances from The Mavericks, rock and roll hall of fame member Darlene Love, Tony Award-winning actress Kelli O’Hara, and the Singing Sergeants from the US Air Force Band. The Boston Pops will also delight the crowd with their rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, a fan favorite.

Despite earlier wet weather, forecasts for Thursday afternoon called for dry, albeit warm and muggy conditions for the festivities on the Esplanade. While dedicated Fireworks Spectacular attendees began massing nearby, crews spent much of Wednesday preparing the Esplanade for this year’s events. Among the preparations, ceremonial guns were brought in from the National Guard armory in Danvers to be fired during the 1812 Overture, adding to the spectacle.

For the first time, the Pops practiced inside Symphony Hall instead of braving the elements. This departure from tradition was due to concerns about the hot weather and humidity combining with the Hatch Shell’s architecture, which could have created problematic conditions for some musicians. Stage Manager John Demick explained that they would have violinists and cellists covering their instruments with towels to prevent damage from the heat and humidity.

As temperatures cooled, the Pops took the stage at the Hatch Shell near sunset for their final dress rehearsal. Numerous security measures were in place, including thorough checks of vendors and bag checks for attendees. Road closures were already in effect along Storrow Drive, and more closures were expected throughout the day. To encourage people to use public transportation, all MBTA trains, buses, and ferries would be free after 9:30 p.m.

This year’s Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the fireworks show. The free Fourth of July concert on the Esplanade dates back to 1929, but fireworks were added in 1974 thanks to the collaboration between late businessman David Mugar and famed Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler. Mugar’s suggestion to add fireworks, church bells, and cannons to the grand finale of the 1812 Overture drew in bigger crowds and sparked an unprecedented level of popularity. This addition became a new tradition that turned the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular into one of the most recognized Fourth of July events in the country. Mugar personally funded the Fireworks Spectacular until 2000 and also owned Channel 7 for more than a decade. To honor Mugar’s contributions, the event has been renamed “the Mugar Family Fireworks.”

The entire 2024 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will be broadcast on 7NEWS and produced by Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg Radio. Herb Chambers sponsors the show, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable experience for all attendees and viewers.

In conclusion, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular at the Hatch Shell Oval remains a beloved tradition that brings together music, fireworks, and community spirit to celebrate Independence Day. This year’s event promises to be exceptional, with outstanding performances and a nod to its rich history. Whether attending in person or watching from home, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is an experience not to be missed.
