Late Wednesday night, Boston Common and the Boston Public Garden fell victim to an act of vandalism that left benches and monuments defaced with disturbing phrases. Spray-painted in red graffiti, phrases such as “Death to Amerikkka,” “End Zionism,” “Free Gaza,” and “Free Palestine” marred these public spaces, causing outrage among city officials and residents alike.
The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a symbol of honor and remembrance, was one of the structures targeted. In addition, 15 park benches were defaced, along with the Boston Public Garden Foot Bridge. Reacting to this act of vandalism, Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn expressed his disgust and condemnation for the graffiti in a tweet. The Boston Police Department is taking this incident seriously, categorizing the vandalism as a hate crime. Video footage captured six possible suspects near the scene around 11:50 p.m. on Thursday.
