Biden Adviser Urges Grocery Chains to Lower Profit Margins, Highlighting Persistent High Prices
Inflation has become a growing concern for voters as November’s presidential election approaches. As grocery prices continue to rise, a top economic adviser for President Joe Biden is urging grocery chains and food companies to lower their profit margins. Lael Brainard, the director of Biden’s National Economic Council, expressed the importance of addressing this issue during a news conference at a National Association for Business Economics event in Washington, D.C.
Brainard highlighted a common practice among consumer brands, where they effectively raise unit prices by shrinking packaging. She emphasized the need to call out this deceptive practice and utilize the necessary tools to combat it. Additionally, Brainard called upon grocery stores and chains that raised their margins during the height of the pandemic to reconsider their pricing strategies.
President Biden himself has also voiced his concerns over elevated prices, particularly in snack foods, criticizing certain companies during a Super Bowl Sunday video. This focus on “shrinkflation” as a rip-off reflects the administration’s commitment to addressing consumer grievances.
Interestingly, despite positive economic indicators, such as a strong U.S. economy, Biden’s job-approval ratings have remained stagnant at around 40%. A recent poll revealed that 51% of swing-state voters trust former President Donald Trump over Biden when it comes to handling the U.S. economy. This underscores the urgency with which the administration is approaching the issue of high prices.
Brainard also discussed how Americans can push back against elevated prices by altering their spending habits. By choosing to shop differently, consumers can exert pressure on grocery margins and encourage them to come down. Brainard acknowledged the frustration people feel towards high prices and affirmed President Biden’s commitment to addressing the issue. The administration plans to utilize its tools to combat deceptive practices, hidden price increases, and other tactics that lack transparency.
The impact of these concerns was reflected in the stock market, with the main U.S. stock gauges mostly higher following a report on retail sales. Investors’ anxiety about inflation was assuaged, providing some relief amidst the ongoing discussion surrounding high prices.
As the November presidential election draws nearer, it is clear that addressing high prices and inflation is a top priority for the Biden administration. By urging grocery chains to lower their profit margins and calling out deceptive practices, the administration aims to alleviate the burden on consumers and regain their trust in handling the U.S. economy. With a commitment to transparency and price sensitivity, President Biden and his economic advisers are taking steps to address the persistent issue of high prices in the grocery industry.
