Beyoncé’s Country Tracks Attracting Fresh Audience, Amplifying Streaming Numbers for Black Artists

Superstar singer-songwriter Beyoncé Knowles is breaking barriers and expanding the reach of country music with her foray into the genre. By embracing country music, a genre that has historically excluded women of color, Beyoncé is not only proving the strong interest in Black female artists but also amplifying streaming numbers for other Black female country artists.

The impact of Beyoncé’s country music era is evident in the streaming numbers. Country star Tanner Adell, a Black artist, saw a significant increase in streams for her tracks “Buckle Bunny” and “Trailer Park Barbie” after Beyoncé’s country singles were released. Other Black female country artists like Mickey Guyton and Reyna Roberts also experienced boosts in their streaming numbers. Even Beyoncé’s own country-esque song “Daddy Lessons” from her album “Lemonade” saw a 540% spike in streams after the release of her two country singles.

Beyoncé’s success in the country music genre is groundbreaking. Her single “Texas Hold ‘Em” made her the first Black woman to claim the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Country chart. This achievement is a significant milestone that highlights the progress being made in diversifying country music.

The announcement of Beyoncé’s upcoming album, “Act II: Cowboy Carter,” further solidifies her commitment to country music. The album title symbolizes the breakthrough of Black women in the genre and signifies a pivotal moment in time. According to Alice Randall, a New York Times bestselling author and country songwriter, Beyoncé’s album announcement marks the breaking of barriers that have kept Black women out of country music for too long.

However, acceptance for artists of color in country music remains a challenge. Despite the positive reception from some music critics, Beyoncé’s country tracks faced resistance from some fans of the genre. While pop radio stations played her track “Texas Hold ‘Em” 49 times, country stations only played it twice. This discrepancy highlights the ongoing racial biases in the industry.

The underrepresentation of artists of color in country music is evident in the data. From 2002 to 2020, only about 1.5% of artists played on country radio stations were Black, compared to about 98% who were white. Artists of color, including those who identified as Hispanic, Indigenous, biracial, or Filipino, made up about 1% of artists played. The lack of diversity extends beyond radio airplay to include charting songs, artists signed to major labels, and award nominations.

The resistance to Beyoncé’s recent music can be attributed to racism and political bias within the country music industry. Country music has traditionally skewed conservative, and newer and more liberal artists have faced pushback when trying to transition away from the genre’s conservative roots. Beyoncé’s negative ratings from registered Republicans in an NBC News poll further highlight the political divide within her fan base.

Despite the challenges, Beyoncé’s foray into country music is attracting a younger audience to the genre. Listeners from Generation Z and millennials, known for their diversity, have shown newfound interest in country music. The increase in streaming numbers for country music overall supports this shift, with a 24% year-over-year spike in streams from 2022 to 2023.

Spotify’s Nashville team has noticed the rise in younger listeners in response to Beyoncé’s entrance into the genre. Playlists outside of the country genre are featuring Beyoncé’s country tracks, broadening its reach and exposing listeners to other country artists. This newfound interest in country music among younger listeners is a positive development for diversifying the genre.

Beyoncé’s influence extends beyond her own music. Pop stars like Lana Del Rey, Post Malone, and Ed Sheeran are reportedly preparing to release country albums, indicating a growing trend of artists exploring the genre. This wave of interest in country music from artists outside the genre further supports the need for diversity and expansion within the industry.

While Beyoncé’s trailblazing career path is making significant strides in diversifying country music, the push for change requires more than one superstar. Historically, it has taken multiple successful artists to shift the needle on a genre that has been formed over 100 years. Beyoncé’s impact is undoubtedly significant, but continued efforts are necessary to create lasting change in the country music industry.
