Beware of Package and Delivery Scams: Australians Targeted by Sophisticated Fraudsters

Package and delivery scams are on the rise in Australia, with scammers tricking people into providing their bank account numbers and personal details. According to a survey conducted by Australia Post, 73% of respondents reported receiving fraudulent emails and texts that purported to be from Australia Post and other courier providers. This is a significant issue as over a quarter of those polled said they had fallen victim to scams leading to identity theft or financial loss, with 5% losing over $20,000.

The survey also revealed that 95% of people receive between one and 16 fraudulent approaches every week. This alarming statistic highlights the prevalence of scams in Australia. Paul Graham, Australia Post’s Group Chief Executive and Managing Director, expressed concern over the increasing sophistication of scam attempts. He stated that scammers are becoming more adept at their tactics, making it harder for individuals to detect fraud.

Phishing scams, which involve fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information by masquerading as trustworthy entities, have become particularly prevalent. These scams often occur through emails or text messages and aim to steal personal and financial information. Scammers send emails from well-known institutions, claiming suspicious activity on accounts and requiring verification through malicious links. The survey found that 54% of respondents had nearly handed over vital information before realizing it was a scam.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted shopping habits, leading to a surge in e-commerce and an increase in the delivery of consumer items. Australia Post recorded almost 100 million parcels being delivered in the six months leading up to March 2024. This shift in behavior has created opportunities for scammers to exploit individuals through package scams.

In addition to package scams, respondents reported receiving other types of fraudulent approaches. These included overdue toll notices (49%), notices of winning fake holidays (39%), fake overdue tax notices (22%), and warnings about a child losing their phone (8%). It is evident that scammers are diversifying their tactics to target individuals in various ways.

To protect themselves from scams, individuals are advised to verify the source of messages and avoid suspicious-looking links. Australia Post recommends using their official app to track deliveries securely. By utilizing the app, customers can stay informed about the status of their packages while minimizing the risk of falling victim to scams.

Australia Post also emphasizes that they will never ask for personal or financial information, including passwords, credit card details, or account information, through calls, texts, or emails. If individuals suspect that they have been compromised or receive suspicious messages, they are urged to contact their bank immediately.
