Benedictine College Nuns Condemn Harrison Butker’s Controversial Commencement Speech

The Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker faced severe backlash after delivering a controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College. The nuns of Mount St. Scholastica, who are affiliated with the college, condemned Butker’s speech for being sexist and anti-LGBTQIA+. In a statement on Facebook, the Benedictine Sisters expressed their disappointment, stating that Butker’s comments do not align with the values of the college and the vision of its founders.

The nuns specifically took issue with Butker’s assertion that being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman. They emphasized that as sisters dedicated to God and God’s people, they have influenced and taught countless women over the years, enabling them to make a tremendous difference in the world through leadership, scholarship, and their careers. They stressed that Butker’s words failed to represent the inclusive and welcoming community that they strive to cultivate.

Moreover, the nuns rejected the narrow definition of Catholicism implied by Butker’s speech. They highlighted that their college community teaches young men and women not just to be homemakers but to create compassionate homes within themselves where they can welcome others as Christ, empowering them to be the best versions of themselves. They expressed gratitude for those who support their values and concluded with a prayerful message.

Butker’s controversial speech touched on various social issues, including working women, Pride Month, and abortion. He received immense criticism for his remarks, with many online expressing outrage throughout the week. In his speech, Butker labeled abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, and support for what he called “degenerate cultural values and media” as stemming from disorder.

The athlete also spoke disparagingly about Pride Month, referring to it as an example of “deadly sins” taught in church. He further told women in the audience that their most important title in life should be “homemaker.” These statements drew widespread condemnation and sparked further backlash against Butker.

Interestingly, Butker’s mother, Elizabeth Keller Butker, is an accomplished physicist. This fact stands in contrast to his rhetoric about women’s roles. Butker also addressed the male graduates, urging them to embrace their masculinity and fight against cultural emasculation.

The fallout from Butker’s offensive speech was swift and extensive. The NFL, GLAAD, and various other organizations condemned his remarks. Social media was ablaze with criticism, including from the wife of a former Chiefs player. However, Butker has yet to publicly address the controversy surrounding his speech.
