Beloved Indianapolis Journalist Tanya Spencer Dies at 53 After Battling Colon Cancer

Longtime Indianapolis television journalist Tanya Spencer passed away on Friday at the age of 53 after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Spencer, who worked in journalism for over 20 years, spent 10 of those years as a reporter and news anchor for WRTV. She was beloved by her colleagues and the community she served.

Spencer’s journey with cancer began in November 2022 when she was diagnosed during emergency surgery. She soon discovered that the cancer had spread throughout her abdomen due to a particularly aggressive genetic mutation. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and taking cancer-fighting medications, Spencer’s health continued to deteriorate, and the treatments proved ineffective in September.

During her battle with cancer, Spencer became an advocate for health, urging others to prioritize their well-being and get regular colonoscopies. She recognized the importance of time and good health as true commodities and currencies that truly matter.

Before her career in journalism, Spencer graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1996 and started her first job as an anchor and reporter for 14 WFIE in Evansville, Indiana. After leaving WRTV in 2015, she transitioned into public service, becoming the Director of Public Relations and a councilwoman for the town of Whitestown, just outside of Indianapolis. She also served as the Vice President for Whitestown’s District 3.

Spencer’s dedication to excellence and hard work was recognized by her colleagues. Emmy award-winning WRTV anchor Rafael Sánchez remembered her as a committed journalist and public servant. He described her as a hard worker who was also a private person, asking for positive thoughts to be sent to her family during this difficult time.

Whitestown Town Manager Katie Barr praised Spencer for her dedication to the community and her deep care for her family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Spencer’s love for the community was infectious, and she will be greatly missed.

The town of Zionsville, located near Whitestown, also expressed their condolences and recognized Spencer as a true public servant. They acknowledged her contributions and the impact she had on both towns. Spencer’s legacy as a dedicated journalist and public servant will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Tanya Spencer leaves behind her husband and teenage son. Her loss is deeply felt by her loved ones, colleagues, and the communities she served. Her remarkable journey serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our time and prioritizing our health.
