Beloved Harris County Drive-In Closes Its Doors Due to COVID-19 Impact
The Showboat Drive-In, located northwest of Cypress in Harris County, Texas, is sadly preparing to close its doors for the last time on September 14th. Owner Andrew Thomas revealed to ABC13 that the closure is a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused significant disruptions in the film industry.
Thomas explained that in 2020, the number of movie releases was severely reduced due to the pandemic. While there are usually around 100 to 150 major releases in a typical year, only 40 were released that year. Over the past three years, the average has been around 80 releases, indicating that the drive-in has been struggling to meet its usual demand.
The impact of COVID-19 was further compounded by the Hollywood writers’ strike and high property taxes, according to Thomas. Additionally, the development in the surrounding area has led to light pollution, which has negatively affected the drive-in’s viewing experience.
As a result of these challenges, Thomas and his wife have made the difficult decision to close the cash-only drive-in, which has been operating since 2005. However, there is a silver lining as they have plans to reopen in two new locations, ensuring that the drive-in experience can continue for their loyal customers.
Unfortunately, the closure of the Showboat Drive-In means that its twelve employees will be out of jobs. One of them, Kendall Carty, shared her emotional connection to the drive-in, stating that she started working there at the age of 16 and has worked her way up to managing the facility. Carty has been living on-site and now faces the challenge of finding new work and a new home.
“It is essentially my life,” Carty expressed. “A huge part of who I am as a person.” Her sentiment reflects the deep impact that the showboat Drive-In has had on its staff and patrons over the years, highlighting the emotional significance of this closure.
