LOS ANGELES — Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor best known for his roles in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” passed away at the age of 61 after a brief illness, according to his representative.

A Prolific Career in Television and Film

Braugher had a successful career spanning over 30 years in television and film, earning multiple award nominations and wins. He was known for his powerful and intense portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton on “Homicide” in the late 1990s, a role that earned him an Emmy. Later, he showcased his comedic talent as Captain Raymond Holt on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” playing a deadpan commanding officer who never cracked a smile.

Breakthrough Role and Award-Winning Performances

Braugher’s breakthrough role came in the 1989 film “Glory,” where he starred alongside Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman in a story about an all-Black regiment during the Civil War. He won his second Emmy for his lead role in the 2006 limited series “Thief” and received a total of 11 Emmy nominations throughout his career.

In addition to his notable television roles, Braugher appeared in numerous films, including “Primal Fear” and “Salt.” He also lent his voice to animated characters in TV shows such as “BoJack Horseman” and “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.”

Remembered and Mourned

Braugher is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, whom he married in 1991 and who was also his co-star on “Homicide,” as well as their three children. Tributes poured in on social media from friends and former co-stars, with Terry Crews, who worked with Braugher on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” expressing his disbelief and honoring the late actor’s talent.

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you, and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon,” Crews wrote on Instagram.

Marc Evan Jackson, who played Holt’s husband on the sitcom, also paid tribute to Braugher with a heartfelt message and a picture captioned “Oh Captain. My Captain.”
