Alex Verdugo Reflects on Trade and Finds Success with Yankees

Alex Verdugo’s journey from being upset about being traded to the Yankees to feeling glad about it has been an interesting one. After spending four years with the Red Sox, Verdugo returned to Fenway Park as a visitor for the first time and admitted that it felt both special and weird to be back. However, he did not harbor any bitterness about the trade, stating that he believes it happened for a reason and looking back, it was better for him.

Since joining the Yankees, Verdugo has played a significant role in the team’s strong start to the season. Acquired in exchange for reliever Greg Weissert and two minor league pitchers, he has found a strong fit within the Yankees clubhouse. Verdugo attributes his success to being able to be himself and bring his energy to the team. Manager Aaron Boone made it clear to Verdugo that they wanted him to be himself and that his personality was something they were missing.

Verdugo’s personality and energy have been welcomed by the Yankees’ leadership group, led by Aaron Judge. Boone, Judge, and Anthony Rizzo had actually been trying to get the Yankees to acquire Verdugo for a few years before the trade happened. This knowledge helped Verdugo settle in quickly and make an impact on both sides of the game.

Shortly after the trade, Verdugo made a comment about how Boone has his players’ backs, which some perceived as a dig at Red Sox manager Alex Cora. However, both Verdugo and Cora have since put any issues they had behind them and have a good relationship. Verdugo clarified that there were just a couple of minor things they disagreed on but ultimately had respect for each other.

As for his first game back at Fenway Park, Verdugo expected to be received like a Yankee. The trade that initially upset him has turned out to be a positive change for his career.
