ALDI Removes Plastic Bags from All US Stores

German retailer ALDI has made a significant move towards sustainability by completely phasing out plastic shopping bags in all of its 2,300 stores in the United States. This decision is expected to save thousands of tons of plastic waste each year. ALDI’s commitment to the environment also extends to implementing environmentally friendly coolants in its refrigeration systems.

According to ALDI CEO Jason Hart, eliminating plastic shopping bags and transitioning to environmentally friendly refrigerant systems not only helps protect the environment but also reduces costs, which are then passed on to customers. Hart believes that this change will benefit both customers and employees, making them feel good about shopping at ALDI and proud to work there.

Previously, shoppers at ALDI could purchase plastic bags, contributing nearly 4,500 tons of plastic to domestic waste streams annually. However, with the complete elimination of plastic bags, ALDI will now offer cloth bags at stores and allow customers to use empty cardboard boxes or purchase paper bags as alternatives.

ALDI’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond eliminating plastic bags. The retailer has pledged to use natural refrigerants in all of its U.S. stores by the end of 2035, reducing annual carbon emissions by 60%. Around 600 stores have already implemented this transition. ALDI believes that natural refrigerants will keep its products fresh while supporting a healthier planet.

In addition to its sustainability efforts, ALDI has recently acquired several other retailers, including 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores. The company has received praise for its environmentally friendly approach while remaining affordable. ALDI serves millions of customers each month and aims to have a positive impact on customers, employees, and communities by being socially and environmentally responsible.

It is worth noting that the use of disposable plastic bags has been banned in multiple U.S. states as part of ongoing efforts to reduce plastic pollution. States such as Colorado, Maine, New Jersey, California, and New York have already implemented such bans.

ALDI’s decision to phase out plastic shopping bags and implement environmentally friendly practices aligns with its commitment to sustainability and its goal of being a leader in the industry. By taking these steps, ALDI ensures that its customers can shop responsibly without compromising on affordability.
