Certain outdoor areas, where privacy expectations are higher, such as enclosed showers or saunas, are strictly off-limits for these cameras. Noise decibel monitors will only be allowed in common spaces of the property, and their presence and location must be disclosed prior to booking.

The revised policy has been met with approval from private advocacy groups, including the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), based in New York. The organization hailed the changes as a “privacy and safety win” and emphasized that no one should have to worry about being recorded in a rental property. Albert Fox Cahn, the executive director of S.T.O.P., expressed gratitude towards Airbnb for listening to the concerns raised by advocates and renters, stating that the removal of cameras is not just about privacy but also preventing a profound violation of personal space.

Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, Juniper Downs, highlighted that the updated policy was a result of extensive consultation with guests, hosts, privacy experts, and advocacy groups.
