A Look Ahead: Anticipating Historic Moments at the 96th Academy Awards in Oscars 2024

The 96th Academy Awards, set to take place on March 10, 2024, is shaping up to be a historic event. With potential milestones across various categories, this year’s Oscars could see groundbreaking wins for films and individuals. Let’s take a closer look at some of the moments to watch out for at the 2024 Oscars.

Lily Gladstone, the talented actress from “Killers of the Flower Moon,” could make history as the first Native American woman to win the Oscar for Best Actress. Not only that, but she would also become the first person of Native American heritage to win an acting Oscar. In an interview, Gladstone expressed her excitement for others in her community to feel seen and represented.

The film “Oppenheimer” has positioned itself as a strong contender with an impressive 13 nominations. If it manages to secure a win in most of these categories, it could tie or even break the record for the most Oscar wins by a single film. The current record stands at 11 wins and is shared by “Ben-Hur,” “Titanic,” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

Martin Scorsese, the legendary director, has already made history as the most-nominated living director with his 10th nomination for Best Director. However, if he wins this year, he would not only extend his record but also become the oldest Best Director winner at 81 years old.

Sandra Hüller, for her role in “Anatomy of a Fall,” has a chance to become the first German-born actress in over 60 years to win the Best Actress Oscar. The last German-born actress to achieve this feat was Simone Signoret in 1960.

The Best Picture category could witness a historic moment with three films potentially making history. “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Past Lives,” and “The Zone of Interest” could all become the second non-English language film to win Best Picture. The first film to achieve this milestone was “Parasite” in 2020.

Emma Stone, known for her versatility, has the opportunity to accomplish a rare feat. With nominations for Best Actress and Best Picture for producing “Poor Things,” Stone could become only the second woman to win both awards for the same film. Frances McDormand achieved this milestone in 2021 with “Nomadland.”

Colman Domingo, if he wins the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Bayard Rustin in “Rustin,” would become the first actor of Afro-Latino descent to win in the category. This could be a significant moment for representation and diversity in Hollywood.

“American Fiction,” featuring Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown, has the potential to create history with dual wins for Black male actors. If Wright wins Best Actor and Brown wins Best Supporting Actor, it would mark the first time two Black male actors won Oscars for the same film.

Bradley Cooper, nominated for Best Actor for his role in “Maestro,” could join a select group of individuals who have directed themselves to acting wins. If he achieves this, he would be only the third person to do so, following Laurence Olivier and Roberto Benigni.

Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese’s longtime film editor, could make history with a potential fourth win in the Best Film Editing category for her work on “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This would make her the most-awarded person in the category.

John Williams, the legendary composer, could hit a high note by becoming the oldest person to win an Oscar at the age of 92 if he secures the Best Original Score award for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Williams is already the most-nominated living person in Academy Awards history.

Justine Triet, with her nomination for Best Director, could join a small group of women who have been recognized in the category. If she wins, Triet would become only the fourth woman to win Best Director, following in the footsteps of Kathryn Bigelow, Chloé Zhao, and Jane Campion.

With so many potential historic moments on the horizon, the 96th Academy Awards promises to be an unforgettable event. Tune in on March 10 to witness these groundbreaking achievements and celebrate the best of cinema.
