Usher, Fantasia Barrino, and the cast of ‘The Color Purple’ were among the winners at the 55th NAACP Image Awards, which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The annual awards ceremony celebrates the achievements of entertainers and writers of color, and this year’s event was no exception.

Usher, the R&B superstar, was named entertainer of the year, a well-deserved recognition for his three-decade-long successful career. Henson, and Colman Domingo, was awarded best motion picture. Barrino, who portrayed Celie in the film, won best actress in a motion picture. In addition to these awards, New Edition was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. The group, consisting of Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ricky Bell, was recognized for their pioneering influence in the music industry. Michael Bivins, speaking on behalf of the group, emphasized their journey of growth and unity despite the conflicts they faced in their earlier years.

The NAACP Image Awards also acknowledged outstanding performances in television. Damson Idris won best actor in a drama television series for his role in “Snowfall,” while Taraji P. Henson and Colman Domingo received awards for their supporting roles in “The Color Purple.”
