The company recently announced that the next-generation Dodge Charger will be available as both an all-electric vehicle and a powerful gas-powered muscle car. This decision comes after rumors of the traditional Charger’s discontinuation, but Dodge is determined to cater to its loyal gearhead customers while also embracing the future of automotive technology.

The introduction of an all-electric Dodge Charger is a significant milestone for the brand. Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis called it a “game changer in the industry.” The 2024 Charger EV, known as the Daytona, is set to hit the market this summer. With up to 670 horsepower, 627 foot-pounds of peak torque, and a lightning-fast 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds, the Charger Daytona EV is sure to impress.

The new Charger EV will be available in both two-door and four-door models, with the two-door versions hitting the market first. This will be followed by the four-door models in the first quarter of next year. The gas-powered Chargers, equipped with a new inline-six engine, are expected to be available for sale in 2025.

Dodge is confident that the gas-powered models will outperform their V-6 engine predecessors and some of the V-8 variants. Kuniskis stated during a media briefing that they are combining the performance of the “golden age” muscle cars with the technology of the future to ensure that the Dodge brothers’ legacy doesn’t fade away. The ultimate performer in the lineup will be the “Banshee” EV, which will follow the initial vehicles.

One of the advantages of offering both EV and gas-powered versions of the Charger is increased production flexibility. While sales of all-electric vehicles have been growing more slowly than expected, Dodge still sees the potential for EVs to thrive in the market. By offering gas-powered models alongside EVs, Dodge can cater to a wider range of customers and adapt to changing market demands.

In terms of design, the new Charger draws inspiration from a concept car that Dodge revealed in August 2022. It features a modern yet retro look, reminiscent of the current Dodge Challenger. The front end is particularly striking, with a large opening for air to pass through, known as the “R-Wing.” This design element not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also improves aerodynamics.

Dodge is committed to retaining the signature sound and driving characteristics of its current gas-powered Charger and Challenger models in the EV versions. Kuniskis mentioned that they are still working on how the EV will sound, aiming to recreate the roaring sound that enthusiasts love.

While the Charger EV and gas models will eventually come in two- and four-door variants, Dodge is also focused on reducing production complexity and costs. This change aligns with Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares’ strategic plan to streamline operations and reduce carbon emissions. All EV and gas models will share interior and exterior designs, further simplifying production processes.

As for pricing, Dodge has yet to announce specific details for the EV and gas-powered models. However, current starting prices for Charger and Challenger gas models range between approximately $33,000 and $96,000. Customers can expect the pricing for the new Charger lineup to be announced closer to their production dates.

Dodge’s move into the electric vehicle market highlights its commitment to innovation and sustainability. While other brands have shifted towards smaller, more fuel-efficient engines, Dodge has continued to prioritize high-performance vehicles like the Hellcat models. However, this approach has come at a cost to the automaker’s carbon footprint, necessitating the purchase of carbon credits from companies like Tesla. With its “Dare Forward 2030” strategic plan, Stellantis aims to cut its global carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and achieve net carbon zero by 2038.
