Police report: Citi Bike-riding thief poses threat in Central Park, robs 4 victims within an hour

In a shocking and brazen series of crimes, a Citi Bike-riding thief or possibly a group of thieves wreaked havoc in Central Park on Sunday evening, robbing four victims within a span of just over an hour. The incidents have left park-goers on edge and law enforcement scrambling to apprehend the culprits.

The first victim, a 42-year-old woman, was targeted on West Drive near West 86th Street around 7:50 p.m. A young man on a Citi Bike approached her and demanded her bag. Authorities and police sources reported that the suspect appeared to be quite young. In a chilling detail, the victim recounted that the thief boasted about robbing people for a living. As she tried to escape, he ripped her coat. However, she managed to flee, and the suspect eventually gave up the chase and pedaled away on his bike.

The crime spree continued when, at around 8:15 p.m., a 15-year-old girl was approached by a suspect on a Citi Bike who demanded her cellphone and the passcode to unlock it. Frightened and intimidated, the teenager complied with his demands. She briefly attempted to chase the bike-riding robber but was unable to catch up with him. Sources suggest that the suspect may also be a teenager.

A 37-year-old man became the next victim when he tried to intervene in a fight between a man and woman on the West Drive near West 79th Street at approximately 8:40 p.m. The male suspect, in an alarming escalation, simulated having a gun and ordered the victim to hand over his hat, which he did without resistance. The thief then made his getaway by pedaling away on his bike.

Around 20 minutes later, a 36-year-old woman walking on the East Drive near East 109th Street fell prey to the same menacing individual. He confronted her, proclaiming that he robs people for a living, and demanded her property. In a brave act of defiance, the victim refused to comply with his demands. Enraged, the thief grabbed her coat, tearing it in the process. Fearing for her safety, the victim managed to escape and seek help from another woman nearby. The suspect, empty-handed, fled the scene on a Citi Bike.

At this time, the NYPD has not confirmed whether one person is responsible for all four crimes. No arrests have been made as of yet, leaving Central Park visitors and residents concerned for their safety. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incidents or the suspect(s) to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.

The brazenness and audacity displayed by the Citi Bike-riding thief or thieves is a clear reminder that crime can strike anywhere and at any time. It serves as a wake-up call for park-goers and residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to keep themselves safe. As law enforcement works tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice, it is crucial for the community to come together and support their efforts.

In the meantime, it is advisable to avoid walking alone in secluded areas of Central Park, especially during evening hours. If possible, try to walk in groups or with a trusted companion. Additionally, be aware of your surroundings and stay alert for any suspicious activity or individuals.

Central Park has long been cherished as an oasis in the heart of New York City, providing a peaceful retreat for residents and tourists alike. It is disheartening to see such incidents tarnish its reputation. However, with continued cooperation between law enforcement and the community, we can hope to restore a sense of security and ensure that everyone can enjoy the park without fear.

As investigations continue, it is imperative that we remain united against crime and stand together in support of our law enforcement agencies. By doing so, we send a clear message to criminals that their actions will not be tolerated and that Central Park will remain a sanctuary for all to enjoy.
