A third person in the US has died and 96 have been hospitalized after consuming cantaloupes and pre-cut fruit products connected to a salmonella outbreak, causing concern among top US health officials. The outbreak has also affected Canada, with five deaths and 129 illnesses reported.

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Reports 230 Cases of Illness

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a total of 230 cases of illness in the US as of the latest update. The outbreak has spread to 38 states in the US and Canada. The latest onset date recorded was November 10.

Recalls Issued for Cantaloupes and Pre-Cut Fruit Products

Several recalls have been issued in connection with the salmonella outbreak. Crown Jewels Produce, Sofia Produce, and CF Dallas have all recalled cantaloupes and fresh cut fruit products made from whole cantaloupe. Stores like Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, and Kwik Trip have removed the affected fruit from their shelves.

Symptoms of Salmonella Contamination

If you consume food contaminated with salmonella, you may experience food poisoning within 12 to 72 hours. Symptoms typically last 4 to 7 days and include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and children under five years of age are at a higher risk of developing severe infections.
