Jimmy Kimmel Drops a Bombshell: Is This the End of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”?

After nearly two decades on the air, late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has hinted that his beloved show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, may be coming to an end. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Kimmel confessed that he believes his current contract will be his last, stating, “I think this is my final contract.”

The Emmy-winning host, now 56 years old, still has a little over two years left on his current contract, which expires in 2025. However, he seems content with that timeline, saying, “That seems pretty good. That seems like enough.” Kimmel’s desire to retire has been amplified by the prospect of hosting the Oscars in 2024, which has added to his already busy schedule.

But it’s not all about work fatigue for Kimmel. He admits that there are moments when he yearns for retirement, especially when he finds himself exhausted and nodding off at his computer while working on scripts for the Oscars. However, he also acknowledges that he would miss the fun aspects of hosting his talk show.

Kimmel’s retirement plans remain somewhat uncertain. He jokes that his post-show life will likely involve more work, and he’s not sure exactly what he’ll do with his free time. However, he does mention having various hobbies, such as cooking and drawing, that he may pursue during retirement.

This isn’t the first time Kimmel has contemplated ending his show. He previously considered retiring before the 2023 Writers Guild Strike but ultimately decided to continue. The strike itself made him realize that he still enjoys working, comparing himself to Tom Brady, who famously retired and un-retired multiple times in his football career.

Since its debut in 2003, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has become a staple of late-night television. Kimmel recently celebrated the show’s 20th anniversary with special guests from the very first episode. He renewed his contract with ABC in 2022 for three more years, ensuring that fans will continue to enjoy his unique brand of humor for the foreseeable future.

As Kimmel’s contract expiration date approaches, fans are left wondering what the late-night landscape will look like without him. Will another host step up to fill his shoes, or will late-night television undergo a significant transformation? Only time will tell. Until then, viewers can savor every moment of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and cherish the remaining years with their favorite funnyman.
