Brooklyn politician attends an anti-Israel event organized by a group under investigation for alleged support of Hamas

In a shocking turn of events, Brooklyn Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher attended an anti-Israel phone bank organized by a group that is currently under investigation for potentially funding terrorists. The event, sponsored by the New Jersey chapter of American Muslims for Palestine and supported by local chapters of the Democratic Socialists of America, has drawn criticism from critics who have accused the group’s leaders of espousing vile antisemitic rhetoric.

Gallagher, who represents Williamsburg, a neighborhood with a large Hasidic Jewish population, spoke at the online event and expressed her solidarity with those who are struggling amidst the ongoing conflict. However, her decision to partner with American Muslims for Palestine has drawn backlash from former Brooklyn City Councilman David Greenfield, who runs the Met Council, the largest Jewish charity in New York City. Greenfield labeled Gallagher as a “radical pol” for associating with a group known for spreading blood libels about Jews.

American Muslims for Palestine’s national leaders have a history of demonstrating hatred towards the Jewish people and Israel. Hatem Bazian, the group’s chair and founder, has shared a cartoon featuring an Orthodox Jew with a disturbing caption implying violence against Palestinians. Furthermore, he has repeatedly pushed the claim that Israel harvests people’s organs. Salah Sarsour, another national board member, has allegedly raised funds for the charity Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, which were intended for Hamas terrorists.

The investigation into American Muslims for Palestine’s parent body in Virginia adds further concern to their activities. The group is being probed for allegedly fundraising for Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. The charity’s former leaders were convicted in 2008 for funneling over $12 million to Hamas.

Critics argue that Gallagher’s attendance at the anti-Israel event raises questions about her judgment and values. As a representative of one of the largest Jewish communities in America, it is surprising that she would align herself with individuals and groups known for their antisemitic views. The lack of a comment from Gallagher’s spokesperson adds to the controversy and leaves many wondering about her stance on these issues.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of careful consideration when aligning with organizations and individuals. It is crucial for politicians to be aware of the ideologies and rhetoric espoused by the groups they choose to associate with, especially when representing diverse communities. Gallagher’s decision to attend an event sponsored by a group under investigation for alleged support of terrorism raises concerns about her ability to effectively represent all of her constituents.
