$970 Million Allocated for Modernization Projects across Multiple US Airports

In an effort to improve and modernize airport infrastructure, the Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that over 100 airports across the United States will receive a total of $970 million in funding. The funding, awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is part of President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Investing in America agenda, which includes the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

With approximately 114 airports in 44 states and three territories set to benefit from this funding, the aim is to enhance passenger experience, accessibility, and sustainability while also creating job opportunities. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated that these investments will not only make it easier for passengers to travel but also increase safety for all.

The funding will be used for various purposes, including the construction of new baggage systems and larger security checkpoints, increasing gate capacity, and modernizing aging infrastructure in terminals and ground transportation systems. The improvement of roadways and accessibility for individuals with disabilities will also be prioritized. Additionally, nine grants will be allocated to refurbish aging air traffic control towers.

Among the airports receiving significant funding is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, which will receive $50 million. This funding will support a project connecting terminals, enhancing security checkpoints, and providing new retail space. O’Hare International Airport in Illinois will receive $40 million for terminal improvements, a reconfigured TSA checkpoint, a new hold room, and widening of a concourse. Los Angeles International Airport will receive approximately $31 million for utility improvements on runways and the development of stormwater containment systems. Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia is set to receive $35 million for the construction of a new terminal building with connections to the Aerotrain and Metrorail.

Numerous other airports across the country, including those in Alaska, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Texas, will also benefit from millions of dollars in funding.

The funding is part of the Airport Terminal Program, one of three aviation programs established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides $1 billion annually for five years specifically for airport terminal program grants.

This funding announcement follows the FAA’s commitment last year to spend over $100 million on various improvements at airports across the country to reduce the risk of runway incursions. Furthermore, last month, the DOT awarded more than $240 million in funding for airport infrastructure grants to support modernization efforts in 37 states, including runway and taxiway improvements.

With these significant investments in airport infrastructure, the Biden administration is working towards improving the travel experience, creating jobs, and ensuring safety for all passengers. Through these modernization projects, airports across the United States will be better equipped to handle increased demand for air travel and provide a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for all.
