“Recognizing the Impact: Houston Tourism Bureau Commemorates the Valuable Contributions of Black Houstonians”

Houston First, the city’s tourism bureau, is making sure that the contributions of Black Houstonians are celebrated year-round with their new initiative, Houston Signature Experiences. This unique program brings together five experiences that showcase the past, present, and future contributions of Black individuals in Houston. From historical landmarks to culinary delights, these experiences aim to give locals and visitors a deeper appreciation for the city’s Black history.

One of the highlights of Houston Signature Experiences is a visit to the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in downtown Houston. Built in 1875, this church holds great historical significance as Houston’s first Black Baptist congregation. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, it provides a glimpse into the rich religious heritage of the Black community in Houston.

For those interested in exploring the city’s history further, the Heritage Society offers tours of three historic houses that tell stories from plantation to emancipation. This immersive experience allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs of Black Houstonians throughout history.

Food enthusiasts can also indulge in the flavors of Southern cuisine at “This Is It Soul Food.” This iconic restaurant not only serves up hearty and delectable soul food dishes but also takes guests on a journey through the history and legacy of its recipes. It’s a chance to savor the flavors and learn about the cultural significance of this beloved cuisine.

No visit to Houston would be complete without a trip to Pur Noire, the city’s first Black-owned winery. This unique establishment offers wine enthusiasts the opportunity to taste and learn about their selection of wines sourced from California vineyards. By showcasing this Black-owned business, Houston is making strides in promoting diversity within the wine industry.

Visitors have the option to pay for each experience individually or mix and match to create their own personalized itinerary. The goal is to highlight lesser-known places that people may have vaguely heard about and provide them with an in-depth experience of Houston’s Black history. By doing so, Houston aspires to join the ranks of other great cities known for their Black History destinations.
