Delta Airlines to Launch New Tier of Upscale Airport Lounges in 2021 as Part of Luxury Travel Expansion

Delta Airlines is making moves to cater to high-spending travelers by launching a new tier of upscale airport lounges. The first of these “premium” lounges is set to open in June at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and will be the largest of Delta’s lounges, spanning 38,000 square feet. Other high-end lounges will also be opened in Boston and Los Angeles later this year.

Delta has been expanding its network of Sky Clubs in recent years to accommodate the growing number of travelers gaining access through memberships, airline status, credit card benefits, or flying in premium cabins. However, the airline faced some backlash when it announced plans to limit entry into its lounges. As a result, Delta has adjusted its approach and is now focusing on creating more exclusive experiences for different types of travelers.

This move by Delta is similar to what other major airlines have done. United Airlines operates Polaris lounges, while American Airlines has Flagship lounges, in addition to their standard airport clubs. By offering a tiered system of lounges, airlines can better cater to the needs and preferences of their customers.

Delta has not disclosed the specific entry requirements for the new premium lounges but has mentioned that the JFK location will feature a full-service restaurant and “wellness” areas. This suggests that the airline is aiming to provide a more luxurious and holistic experience for its high-spending travelers.

In addition to the premium lounges, Delta also plans to open standard Sky Clubs in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a new location in Seattle later this year. The carrier is also looking to expand its clubs in Miami and New York’s LaGuardia airports.

The launch of these new clubs is part of Delta’s overall strategy to prioritize travelers flying in premium cabins. The airline saw a significant increase in revenue from business class or premium economy tickets last year, with a growth rate of 26%. This segment generated $19.1 billion in sales, while sales of main cabin tickets rose by 20% to reach $24.5 billion.

Delta’s move to create a new tier of upscale airport lounges is a clear indication of the airline’s commitment to providing a differentiated and personalized travel experience for its high-spending customers. By offering exclusive amenities and services, Delta aims to stand out in the highly competitive aviation industry and attract more premium travelers. With the opening of the first premium lounge in June, travelers can look forward to a new level of luxury and comfort when flying with Delta.
