Rudy Giuliani asserts that Trump campaign is indebted to him for $2M in legal fees

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and once known as “America’s Mayor,” has claimed that the Trump 2020 campaign and the Republican National Committee owe him $2 million in legal fees for his efforts to challenge the election results. Giuliani made this assertion during a bankruptcy court hearing, stating that he was asked by former President Donald Trump to lead the legal matters for the campaign after he lost to President Joe Biden in November 2020.

Giuliani explained that when he took on this role, Trump had numerous complaints about alleged election fraud and wanted him to spearhead efforts to address these concerns. Giuliani worked tirelessly for several weeks, focusing on various election districts where the results were close. However, despite his expectations of being paid for both his legal work and expenses, Giuliani stated that he only received reimbursement for the latter. He estimated that he is owed around $2 million in legal fees alone.

Following the court hearing, Giuliani expressed his satisfaction with how the meeting was conducted, describing it as professional and reminiscent of how courts used to operate. He emphasized that he provided all the necessary information to the trustee overseeing his bankruptcy case and had nothing to hide.

It is worth noting that Giuliani’s bankruptcy filing stemmed from a $148 million civil judgment against him for defaming two election workers in Georgia. He accused them of voter fraud while they were counting ballots in Fulton County during the 2020 election. At the time of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Giuliani claimed debts ranging from $100 million to $500 million, with only $10 million in assets.

In addition to the enormous civil judgment, Giuliani faces other legal challenges. He has over $1.4 million in legal debt, owes $700,000 to the IRS, and has a $260,000 bill from the New York State tax authorities. Furthermore, he is involved in five other pending lawsuits, including those filed by Hunter Biden and Dominion, as well as a sexual assault suit brought by his former employee Noelle Dunphy. Giuliani is also facing racketeering charges alongside Trump in a Georgia election fraud case.

Giuliani’s bankruptcy lawyer, Gary Fischoff, stated that the issue of the unpaid legal fees would be addressed in the bankruptcy proceeding. This situation mirrors that of Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, who filed a lawsuit against the Trump Organization in 2019 claiming nearly $2 million in unpaid legal fees. The case was settled shortly before trial in July for an undisclosed amount.

As the legal battles continue for Giuliani, it remains to be seen how his bankruptcy case will unfold and whether he will ultimately receive the $2 million in legal fees he claims to be owed.
