Official Reports: Chase Suspects on Highway 90A Fatally Strike Sugar Land Employee

On Wednesday morning, tragedy struck in Sugar Land, Texas when innocent driver Joseph Aponte Sr., a 56-year-old employee of the Sugar Land Public Works Department, was fatally struck by burglary suspects fleeing from the police. The suspects were involved in a chase that began in Missouri City and ended with a devastating crash on Highway 90A.

According to official reports, the incident started when officers in Missouri City responded to a burglary call and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black SUV believed to be involved in the crime. However, the suspects refused to comply and sped away, leading to a high-speed pursuit. The chase eventually reached Sugar Land, where the suspects ran a red light at the intersection of Gillingham Lane and Highway 90A, colliding with Aponte’s Public Works truck as he entered the intersection. Tragically, Aponte did not survive the crash.

A new video obtained by ABC13 captured the suspects leaving the scene of the burglary just minutes before the fatal collision. The footage shows two vehicles involved in the incident: the black SUV and a Toyota Camry. The authorities have revealed that three individuals were in the suspect car, and two of them had to be extricated by emergency crews before being taken to the hospital and subsequently to jail.

News of Aponte’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, as he was a beloved colleague who had been working for the City of Sugar Land for approximately a year. Sugar Land Police Chief Mark Poland expressed his condolences, saying, “My heart goes out to the family today of our coworker who lost his life in this horrible incident. This is pretty hard. It hits home.” In honor of Aponte’s memory, the city lowered flags at the Public Works building to half-staff.

The incident has raised questions about chase policies and procedures in Missouri City, as well as concerns about public safety during high-speed pursuits. While Missouri City police located the second vehicle involved in the incident and made an arrest, they have not responded to inquiries about their chase policy.

The devastating loss of Joseph Aponte Sr. has prompted authorities to take swift action. Chief Poland has announced that murder charges will be pursued against the suspects involved in the chase, ensuring that justice is served for the innocent life that was tragically cut short.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise during police pursuits and the importance of implementing safe and effective chase policies. As the community of Sugar Land mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant, it is hoped that this tragedy will lead to a reevaluation of current protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

In memory of Joseph Aponte Sr., may his family find solace in the outpouring of support from their community, and may his legacy serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by public workers who strive to make our cities safer every day.
