Sofía Vergara Reveals Reason for Divorce: Different Desires for Children

Sofía Vergara has confirmed that her divorce from Joe Manganiello was due to their differing desires to have children. In a recent interview with El País, the 51-year-old actress explained, “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids, and I didn’t want to be an old mom.” She expressed that she believes it wouldn’t be fair to the baby. While she respects those who choose to have children later in life, she stated that it’s not the path for her anymore.

Ready to Be a Grandmother

Vergara, who already has a 32-year-old son from her first marriage, expressed her readiness to become a grandmother rather than a mother again. She mentioned that she is almost in menopause and believes it’s the natural way of things. She humorously added, “When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do.”

Open to Love Again

Despite her divorce, Vergara remains open to finding love again. However, she clarified that her next romantic partner should already have children of his own. In October 2023, she debuted her relationship with orthopedic surgeon Justin Saliman, but it’s unclear whether he has children.

Vergara and Manganiello announced their divorce in July 2023 after seven years of marriage. In an exclusive statement to Page Six, they requested privacy as they navigate this new phase of their lives. A source close to Manganiello revealed that he had always wanted to be a dad, and his desire for children only grew stronger over the years.

Despite the heartbreak, Vergara admitted that she was pleasantly surprised by the respectful and accurate media coverage of their split, which made it easier to overcome. Manganiello has also moved on and made his red carpet debut with actress Caitlin O’Connor in December 2023.
