Waiting for King Charles at Balmoral Castle

In an excerpt from royal biographer Robert Hardman’s book, “The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy,” published in the Daily Mail, it is revealed that Princess Anne, 73, was waiting at Balmoral Castle in Scotland for her older brother, King Charles, after the Queen’s death.

A Last Hug

While waiting for King Charles, a senior staffer asked Princess Anne for a hug. In response, she smiled and said firmly, “That is the last time that’s going to happen,” as described in Hardman’s book.

Hardman also included a memo written by the Queen’s private secretary, Sir Edward Young, detailing her final moments. According to Young’s letter, the Queen passed away peacefully in her sleep due to old age, without experiencing any pain.

In a documentary called “Charles III: The Coronation Year,” Princess Anne revealed that her mother was worried about the difficulties of planning her funeral if she were to pass away in Scotland. However, Anne and others tried to persuade her that this should not be a deciding factor.

Royal Family’s Response

When the Queen passed away, members of the royal family rushed to be by her side. Prince William, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward traveled to Balmoral Castle, while Prince Charles and Queen Camilla spent an hour with the Queen before her death. Kate Middleton chose to stay in the UK with their children as they had just started school.

Meghan Markle’s Absence

Reports suggested that Meghan Markle was ordered to stay home in Montecito, California, while Prince Harry went to Scotland. This decision allegedly made it easier for the royals to inform Harry that Meghan was not welcome at Balmoral.

Overall, Princess Anne’s reaction after Queen Elizabeth’s death showcased her strength and composure during a difficult time for the royal family.
