Houston Postpones MLK Parades Due to Winter Weather Advisory

Houston Winter Weather Postpones Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade

The City of Houston has made the decision to postpone the 46th annual Houston Downtown Martin Luther King Jr. Parade due to the incoming winter weather in the area.

The announcement was made on Sunday evening as temperatures began to drop. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of southeast Texas, including Houston, which started at 6 p.m. on Sunday and is expected to last until Monday.

Rescheduling of Other Events

In addition to the parade, the 30th annual MLK Grand Parade and the MLK Boulevard trail ride in southeast Houston are also expected to be rescheduled.

Mayor’s Statement

Mayor John Whitmire released a statement explaining the decision to postpone the parade, emphasizing public safety. He consulted with Houston Police Chief Troy Finner, HFD Chief Sam Peña, and George Buenik, director of the Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety, who all agreed that postponing the parade was in the best interest of everyone involved.

“For several years, the City of Houston and the Black Heritage Society have come together to hold the parade in honor of Dr. King’s life and legacy. While we cannot gather due to the forecasted dangerous wintry conditions, I encourage everyone to take a moment on MLK Day to reflect on Dr. King’s teachings. Please also check in on your family, friends, and neighbors to ensure their well-being during the day and evening tomorrow,” Mayor Whitmire stated.
