Madison Marsh Becomes First Active-Duty Air Force Officer to Win Miss America
Madison Marsh made history on Sunday night as she became the first active-duty Air Force officer to be crowned Miss America. The 22-year-old 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force and graduate intern at Harvard Medical School emerged victorious from a pool of 50 contestants in the 2024 Miss America pageant held in Florida over the weekend.
Achieving the Top Spot
Marsh, who previously held the title of Miss Colorado, earned widespread praise from both the military branch she serves in and leaders from her home state. The US Air Force congratulated her on Twitter, stating, “Congratulations to our very own #Airman, 2nd Lt. Madison Marsh, aka Miss Colorado – who was just crowned @MissAmerica 2024.” Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade also expressed his support for Marsh’s victory, saying, “Madison, the [City of Colorado Springs] wishes you great success. You have inspired countless girls to dream big and reach for the stars.”
A Multifaceted Achiever
Marsh’s accomplishments extend beyond her beauty pageant success. She graduated from the Air Force Academy last year and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. Additionally, she founded the Whitney Marsh Foundation, which raises funds for cancer research in honor of her mother who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2018.
A Journey to Victory
Marsh, originally from Arkansas, faced stiff competition throughout the Miss America pageant. After three nights of preliminary competitions, she advanced to the final round along with 10 other contestants. The finalists participated in various categories, including a discussion round and evening gown presentation. Ultimately, Marsh’s spoken-word piece about earning her pilot’s license at 16 and her dedication to her military career resonated with the judges and secured her the crown.

While Marsh claimed the title of Miss America, Ellie Breaux, representing Texas, was awarded first runner-up. Marsh’s exceptional performance during the pageant, as well as her commitment to making a difference in the world, solidified her place as a role model for aspiring young women.
