Federal Employees Face Termination for Participating in Protest Against President Biden’s Handling of Israel’s War Against Hamas
House Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that federal employees who take part in a planned walkout to protest President Biden’s approach to Israel’s conflict with Hamas should be fired. Johnson made this statement in response to an AL-Monitor news article reporting that workers from 22 agencies intend to join the work stoppage on Tuesday to express their dissatisfaction with Biden’s Gaza policies.
According to Johnson, any government worker who walks off the job to protest US support for Israel is neglecting their responsibilities and betraying the trust of taxpayers. He has pledged to collaborate with House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, another Republican, to ensure that appropriate disciplinary actions are taken against those who participate in the walkout.
The protest is organized by a group called Feds United for Peace, which plans to hold a “Day of Mourning” to mark the 100th day of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. The conflict began after Hamas terrorists launched a surprise attack on October 7, resulting in the death of 1,200 Israelis and the kidnapping of over 200 individuals. The Gaza health ministry, backed by Hamas, claims that nearly 24,000 Palestinians have been killed during the past three months. Israel’s military, on the other hand, reports that approximately 9,000 Palestinian fighters have been killed, while they have lost 189 IDF soldiers.
The expected protest has garnered support from employees in various federal agencies, including the Executive Office of the President, the Departments of Defense, State, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs, as well as the National Security Agency. Workers from agencies such as the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Naval Research Laboratory, the National Park Service, the Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Environmental Protection Agency are also expected to participate.
The demonstration is seen as an unusual manifestation of dissent through physical action. It comes at a time when President Biden is facing criticism from both within and outside the federal government for his stance on Israel. Biden recently stated that he is quietly pressuring Israel to withdraw from Gaza.
In response to the planned protest, Israeli officials have reduced troop levels in Gaza. Meanwhile, anti-Israel demonstrators targeted the White House over the weekend, chanting anti-Biden slogans and pushing against a reinforced fence. Non-essential staff were evacuated from the area as a precaution.
