Mike Vrabel Fired as Titans Head Coach After Controversial Patriots Visit
Mike Vrabel’s tenure as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans came to an end on Tuesday after six seasons and back-to-back losing campaigns. However, it appears that his midseason visit to Foxborough didn’t sit well with the Titans’ organization and may have contributed to his firing.
The Controversial Patriots Visit
During the Titans’ bye week on October 22, Vrabel attended the Patriots-Bills game in New England to be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. In his speech at Gillette Stadium, he praised his former team, which reportedly raised eyebrows within the Titans’ organization.
Vrabel’s Comfortable Reunion
Vrabel, a former linebacker for the Patriots, won three Super Bowls during his time with the team. He appeared comfortable during the game, receiving VIP treatment from team owner Robert Kraft. In his halftime ceremony speech, Vrabel emphasized the specialness of the Patriots organization and urged everyone to not take it for granted.
Titans Owner’s Displeasure
Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk reportedly didn’t appreciate Vrabel’s Patriots reunion, but the two never discussed it. According to reports, she let her displeasure fester, which ultimately led to Vrabel’s firing.
Patriots Considered Vrabel as Successor
Interestingly, the Boston Globe reported in November that Kraft considered Vrabel as his “home run choice” to succeed Bill Belichick as the Patriots’ head coach. Belichick and the Patriots recently parted ways after a disappointing season.
Communication Issues and Misunderstandings
The decision to fire Vrabel was made by Strunk, who took issue with Vrabel’s visit to New England and the rumors surrounding him potentially becoming the Patriots’ coach. Poor communication, misinterpreted statements, and misunderstandings between Vrabel and Strunk contributed to the deterioration of their relationship.
Future for Vrabel and the Titans
Vrabel, who took over as head coach of the Titans in 2018, expressed his desire to recreate the “Patriot way” wherever he goes. With a head coach vacancy in Foxborough, Vrabel is considered one of the top choices to fill the position. The offseason should be interesting for both Vrabel and the Titans.
