Manchester’s Creative Energy

Chanel’s decision to host the event in Manchester was a departure from their usual choice of London. Bruno Pavlovsky, the brand’s director of fashion, explained that they were drawn to Manchester’s creative energy and rich musical history. Creative director Virginie Viard found inspiration in the city’s vibrant music and art scene.

The show prominently featured local musicians and artists, with music from Manchester bands like The Fall and New Order. Notable local rappers Aitch and Bugzy Malone, as well as the children of Liam and Noel Gallagher, were also in attendance.

A Controversial Presence

While the event was a celebration of fashion and art, it did not come without controversy. One protester outside the venue held a sign criticizing the city council’s priorities, suggesting that basic needs like food and heat should take precedence over luxury goods.

Celebrating Skilled Artisans

The Metiers d’Art show has historically been hosted in various global cities, including Paris, New York, Rome, Dakar, Salzburg, and Dallas. The last time it appeared in the UK was at Linlithgow Castle in Scotland in 2012. The show pays tribute to the skilled artisans and craftspeople that Chanel collaborates with. This year’s collection drew inspiration from the 1960s and incorporated elements of Great Britain, with a particular focus on tweed, Shetland, and cashmere.

Manchester’s renowned football culture was also acknowledged, with models showcasing Chanel’s interpretation of a Manchester City shirt and a scarf in Manchester United colors. Some lucky guests even enjoyed a pre-show football game at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

A Memorable Conclusion

The event concluded with an after-party at Victoria Baths, a historic former swimming pool that was revived after winning the BBC’s Restoration program in 2003.
