Gas Leak Explosion at Fort Worth Hotel Injures 21 People

An explosion at the Sandman Signature Hotel in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, possibly caused by a gas leak, has resulted in at least 21 injuries and significant damage. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time on Monday, prompting the evacuation of nearby employees.

Injuries and Condition of Victims

According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, one person is in critical condition as a result of the explosion. Aerial footage of the area shows heavy debris scattered across downtown streets, leading authorities to classify it as a “major incident.” The injured individuals have been transported to medical facilities for treatment.

Gas Leak and Explosion

Fort Worth City Councilman Carlos Flores confirmed on Facebook that a gas leak preceded the explosion. Emergency medical services dispatched nine ambulances to the scene, treating a total of 20 patients. One additional injured person drove themselves to the hospital. Currently, one person remains unaccounted for, and it is unclear whether they were a guest or an employee of the hotel.

Investigation and Response

The Fort Worth Fire Department is investigating the incident and searching the building for any remaining individuals. Firefighters have been sifting through debris, including window pieces and exterior parts. While a gas leak is believed to be involved, authorities have not yet determined if it directly caused the explosion. The investigation is ongoing.

The Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel, formerly known as the Waggoner Building, is a historic structure built in 1920. It has 245 rooms and underwent extensive reconversion before reopening last May. The hotel is located near the Fort Worth Convention Center.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that he is closely monitoring the situation and prepared to provide additional resources if necessary.
