Virginia Homeowner Orders TikTok ‘Tunnel Girl’ to Cease Viral Digging Project

TikToker Ordered to Abandon Unpermitted Tunnel Digging Project

A TikToker known as “Tunnel Girl” has been issued an order to abandon her unauthorized tunnel digging project in Herndon, Virginia. The project, which gained her half a million followers, involved the excavation of an underground tunnel system leading to a storm shelter off the side of her basement. The TikToker, who goes by the handles @kalaengineer and @engineer.everything, has been documenting the progress of the tunnel system since October 2022.

The Elaborate Project

Kala’s project required cutting through concrete, mining sediment, installing an elevator shaft, pumping out water, and dealing with setbacks like partial collapses and fires. She has been working on the massive undertaking alone in her videos, which have garnered significant attention due to her idiosyncratic presentation. Kala claims to be an office worker by day and speaks in a robotic monotone voice while showcasing her highly complex and dangerous home improvement project.

Order to Abandon

In a recent TikTok video, Kala revealed that city officials visited her and issued a stop work order for her project. She stated that she would need an evaluation by a professional engineer to proceed. Despite rumors, Kala clarified that the tunnel system was constructed entirely below the slab of her house and obtaining the necessary permits and approval should not be too difficult.

Neighbor Concerns

Kala’s neighbor expressed concerns about the lack of safety precautions and the potential impact on neighboring properties. He mentioned that while the noise from the project was not bothersome enough to involve authorities, he found the situation concerning.

Kala declined to comment on the situation until the permit process is complete. Local officials confirmed that they are working with her to address any violations and ensure compliance with the building code.
