Penn Station hampered by Amtrak delays on NYE

Massive Rail Delays at Penn Station Disrupt Holiday Travel Plans

Commuters traveling through Manhattan’s Penn Station on Sunday morning experienced significant delays, causing disruptions to their holiday travel plans. This occurred just blocks away from the nation’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square.

Amtrak and NJ Transit Service Delays

Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor service was delayed by several hours due to server and signal issues, as reported by the railroad in a Twitter post at 8 a.m. As a result, three Acela trains were canceled. NJ Transit also suspended trains on the corridor between Trenton and New York, with additional delays for trains heading in and out of Philadelphia.

Service Resumes with Lingering Delays

By noon, both Amtrak and NJ Transit announced that service had resumed, but warned passengers to expect lingering delays. Despite the inconvenience, many travelers remained calm and understanding of the situation.

Passenger Experiences

One stranded traveler, Chris Carver, had been waiting at Penn’s Moynihan Train Hall for over four hours. Although he was frustrated by the delay, he acknowledged that such issues are common in New York City. Another passenger, Mike Cole, whose train was canceled due to signal delays, remained unfazed and considered it a small price to pay for attending a Phish concert at Madison Square Garden the previous night.

Phans React to Delays

However, not all passengers took the delays lightly. Walter Sawyers, who had traveled from Baltimore to attend the Phish concert, expressed his frustration and decided to cut his losses by returning to the concert instead of waiting for another train. He planned to drown his disappointment with alcohol.

Communication Issues and Passenger Complaints

Some passengers criticized the lack of communication from Amtrak regarding the delays. Michael Chrencik and his friend were at the station bar, downing shots and beers, as their train’s departure time continued to be pushed back. Chrencik expressed frustration with the lack of updates and compared it unfavorably to the communication provided by airlines.

Conclusion

The rail delays occurred as one million people were expected to gather in Times Square for the New Year’s Eve ball drop. Despite the disruptions, commuters were encouraged to rely on mass transit rather than driving.
