Officer-Involved Shooting in Fairhaven Leaves Former New Bedford Deputy Fire Chief Dead

Fairhaven, Mass. – A tragic incident unfolded in Fairhaven on Friday night, resulting in an officer-involved shooting that left a former New Bedford Deputy Fire Chief dead and an officer injured. The authorities are currently investigating the incident.

According to the Fairhaven Police Department, officers were called to 125 Sconticut Neck Road around 5 p.m. in response to a report of an intoxicated male. Shots were exchanged between the officers and Paul Coderre, leading to Coderre’s death. Prior to the fatal exchange, the officers had made several attempts to resolve the situation peacefully using non-lethal force.

During the confrontation, one officer sustained a leg injury and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the officer has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery. New Bedford Mayor Job Mitchell expressed relief that the injured officer is recovering well and that no other individuals were seriously harmed in the incident.

The Bristol District Attorney’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
