Sunny and Icy Friday in Houston

Prepare for Cold Weather: Frost and Freezing Temperatures Expected

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Get ready for the possibility of light frost on Friday morning and a freeze tonight. Make sure to cover your cold-sensitive plants, provide warm shelter for outdoor pets, and protect exposed outdoor pipes for the next two nights.

Weather Pattern and Temperature Outlook

This is due to a calm and clear weather pattern that has kept temperatures below average. Afternoon highs will only reach 50 degrees, even under a bright and sunny sky.

New Year’s Rain Possibility

The next chance of rain will come from New Year’s Eve night through New Year’s Day morning. Currently, we are only seeing a 30% chance, but there is a possibility of scattered showers.

What about Rain on New Year’s Day?

There is a chance of scattered showers towards the end of New Year’s Eve (Sunday) and early on New Year’s Day (Monday), but for now, we have only a 30% chance of rain during that period. A cold front blowing in on Sunday night is what brings the rain possibility, but it will largely depend on the amount of available moisture for the front to work with. Right now, we are leaning towards the front and only have enough moisture for some light passing showers. By sunrise on New Year’s Day, the weather should be mostly dry, and the cold front will already be offshore.

What else should we know about the New Year’s weather forecast?

While rain chances are slim on New Year’s Eve and Day, the prospects for rain seem to significantly increase from Tuesday through Wednesday and possibly again during the first weekend of the New Year as Pacific storms approach from the west. The first storm system impacting us from Tuesday to Wednesday may be cold enough to bring snow to parts of Texas, but it appears unlikely to snow here in southeast Texas at this time.
