Ukraine and Russia Exchange 103 Prisoners of War in Second Swap, Mediated by UAE

Ukraine and Russia made a significant breakthrough in their efforts to bring back prisoners of war by exchanging a staggering 103 individuals on Saturday. This marked the second successful swap in just two days, with the United Arab Emirates playing a crucial role as mediator. Among the 103 Ukrainians released in this latest exchange were 82 soldiers and 21 officers, many of whom had been held captive since the early months of the war in 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his relief and gratitude, stating, “Our people are home.” He also took the opportunity to address the nation, thanking the officials who handled the exchange and commending the bravery and dedication of his troops. Zelensky specifically highlighted the soldiers involved in the daring incursion into Russian territory of Kursk, which began last month. He emphasized that their operation played a vital role in securing the release of Ukrainian prisoners.

The Russian Defense Ministry revealed that the 103 Russian soldiers received in the swap had been taken prisoner during the surprise cross-border incursion into Kursk, which Ukraine initiated in early August. Currently, these soldiers are located in Belarus. Photographs and videos capturing the moment of release showed the Ukrainian prisoners, pale and smiling, with shaved or buzzed heads. Many draped the national blue and yellow flag over their shoulders as they embraced one another and made tearful phone calls to their families.

This prisoner exchange is just one of several that have taken place between Russia and Ukraine since the conflict began. The UAE’s ministry of foreign affairs proudly declared that it had mediated eight prisoner exchanges between the two countries this year alone. Ukrainian officials have previously claimed that their troops captured over 600 Russian soldiers during the Kursk invasion, and they believed this would facilitate the return of many captured Ukrainians.

The successful prisoner exchange is a significant step towards reducing tensions and fostering goodwill between Ukraine and Russia. It brings hope for families who have anxiously awaited the return of their loved ones. While the war continues to inflict suffering on both sides, efforts like these prisoner swaps serve as a reminder that diplomacy and human compassion can prevail even in the midst of conflict.
