This chemical is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the top 10 substances of major concern. The recall, initiated by Refresco Beverages US Inc., affects 9,535 cases of six-pack 8-ounce Great Value brand apple juice sold in Walmart stores.

The Recall and its Classification:
Refresco Beverages voluntarily recalled the apple juice on August 15 after discovering that it contained inorganic arsenic above the action level set in industry guidance. The affected products have a “Best If Used By” date of December 28, 2024, and carry the universal product code 0-78742-29655-5. The recall has been classified as “Class II,” indicating that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

Safety Measures and Investigation:
Walmart, in collaboration with the supplier, has taken immediate action by removing the product from impacted stores and initiating an investigation. Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman emphasized the company’s commitment to prioritizing customer health and safety. Refresco Beverages, however, has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The Dangers of Arsenic:
Arsenic, a natural component of the earth’s crust, can be highly toxic to humans in its inorganic form. The WHO has classified it as a confirmed carcinogen, capable of causing cancer. The FDA has set the action level for inorganic arsenic in apple juice at 10 parts per billion. While complete removal of arsenic from the food supply is not possible, the FDA believes that levels can be reduced through changes in manufacturing processes.

It also increases the risk of skin, bladder, and lung cancers.
