Man Dies After 20-Mile Police Chase Following Bank Robbery
A dramatic police chase that spanned 20 miles and involved multiple law enforcement agencies ended tragically in southeast Houston when the suspect took his own life. The incident began when a man robbed a PNC Bank in Dickinson, Texas, and quickly escalated into a high-speed pursuit.
The robbery took place at approximately 4:49 p.m. at the PNC Bank located on the Gulf Freeway. The suspect, wearing a mask, entered the bank and managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing in a blue vehicle. Dickinson police promptly responded to the scene and initiated a search for the suspect.
Meanwhile, the League City police department received information about a blue Chrysler van and tracked the suspect’s movements on the Gulf Freeway. At around 5 p.m., officers attempted to make a traffic stop near East Medical Center in Webster. However, the suspect refused to comply, triggering a chase that would involve multiple agencies.
The Houston Police Department joined the pursuit during the final 15 minutes, as the suspect veered towards the city’s South Side. The chase eventually led to a dead-end street located in the 4300 block of Alconbury, off of Old Spanish Trail. Unaware of the dead-end, the suspect found himself surrounded by officers.
According to the Houston Police Department, the suspect exited his vehicle while brandishing a weapon. An officer fired at the suspect, but he quickly turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. The suspect’s identity has not been released at this time.
During the pursuit, the suspect collided with a stationary object, resulting in a flat tire. Despite the setback, he continued to evade law enforcement and even struck a League City police vehicle. The officer inside the vehicle sustained minor injuries but has since been treated and released.
