Heading: The Setback: A Wrong Turn and a Malfunctioning GPS

Jim Dreyer, also known as The Shark for his remarkable swimming feats, recently had to abandon his attempt to swim 80 miles across Lake Michigan after realizing he had been heading in the wrong direction. The 60-year-old athlete attributed this mistake to a malfunctioning GPS, which left him without a rudder and ultimately forced him to throw in the towel.

Heading: The Simple Mistake That Led to Failure

Reflecting on the failed endeavor, Dreyer admitted responsibility for the mishap. He expressed his belief that the entire predicament could have been avoided if it weren’t for a simple oversight – two AA batteries. In an online post, he stated, “In the end, I believe it was something as simple as two AA batteries that prevented me from successfully completing a self-sufficient swim across Lake Michigan. It was an accident, but it was my fault. This is a tough pill to swallow.”

Heading: From Success to Setback: Dreyer’s Previous Lake Michigan Swim

Dreyer’s previous accomplishment of swimming the length of Lake Michigan in 1998 from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, to Ludington, Michigan, showcased his determination and skill. However, since last summer, he has fallen short of replicating this feat three times. Undeterred by these setbacks, he embarked on his most recent attempt on August 6th, departing from Grand Haven, Michigan, with his sights set on reaching Milwaukee.

On the second day of his swim, Dreyer found himself well ahead of schedule, hoping to complete the journey in just 60 hours instead of the anticipated 72. With only 23 miles left to go, his progress suddenly came to a halt. The batteries in his GPS device on his supply craft began to die, leaving him adrift. Describing the moment, he wrote, “Turning to my right, I removed the old batteries, and then turned again to my left to get two new batteries from the bag. The bag of batteries was gone!”

Determined to continue, Dreyer relied on his instincts and the natural world around him. Using the setting sun and the constellations as his guides, he believed he was heading towards the glow of Milwaukee. However, as the city lights faded, he found himself aimlessly adrift in the middle of Lake Michigan. He described this disheartening experience, stating, “It was a lost night both literally and figuratively. I was lost in the middle of Lake Michigan. From sundown to sunrise, I mostly swam in circles and made almost no forward progress. What a lot of wasted effort!”

Heading: The Harsh Reality: Being Off Course and the Implications

When Dreyer’s safety boat finally reached him, it delivered the devastating news – he was far off course, approximately 47 miles away from his intended destination. Realizing the magnitude of the setback, he expressed his frustration, saying, “What a blow! The reality was that I was a little less than halfway across the lake after already swimming 60 miles. This translates to a swim of over 100 miles and 100 hours.” Despite the demoralizing experience, Dreyer did not completely rule out attempting the swim again, revealing that he is already contemplating his next move.
