Decoding Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year

The Pantone Color Institute Predicts “Peach Fuzz” as the Color of 2024

Which hue might we see in the coming year? The Pantone Color Institute chooses the abstract idea annually from high-fashion runways, interior design trends, pop culture moments, and human psychology.

A Calming and Nurturing Color for Turbulent Times

The Pantone Color Institute’s research predicts that 2024 would be defined by “Peach Fuzz,” a soft and delicious shade that evokes calm. According to Pantone color specialist Leatrice Eisman, “We’re going through a lot of turmoil in our lives, and we need a nurturing color.” The warm and cozy shade of Peach Fuzz is very tactile, symbolizing our desire to touch others and welcome them into our homes during these challenging times.

Peach Dominates the Runways and Red Carpets

Peach tones dominated the Spring-Summer 2024 runways in Milan, with leading fashion brands such as Gucci, Jil Sander, and Sportmax showcasing this trendy color. Celebrities have also embraced Peach Fuzz on the red carpet. Hilary Duff wore a peach Dolce & Gabbana lingerie-inspired gown to the Oscars Vanity Fair Afterparty in March, while Uma Thurman stunned in a peach-colored Prada Fall-Winter 2023 gabardine dress at the Women Making History Awards.

Color Selection Research Goes Beyond Trends

According to Leatrice Eisman, the Pantone Color Institute’s color selection research is cumulative and goes beyond looking at the latest peach variations. For example, the king of greige, Giorgio Armani, released a stunning Spring-Summer 2016 collection that favored salmon over suit-gray. Even Beyoncé’s peach-colored gown from the 2016 Met Gala was considered influential. Eisman explains, “We felt that (Beyoncé’s look) was something that really had life today. If we see it in 2016 and think it’s a good idea that’ll grow, we use it too. We remember what we’ve seen.”

Peach Fuzz in Pop Culture

Peach pop cultural moments have increased over the years. Notable figures have donned the color on the red carpet, further solidifying its popularity. Florence Pugh wore a shaded Spring-Summer 2020 Chloé dress to the French premiere of “Little Women,” while Zoë Kravitz’s peach Oscar de la Renta column gown received attention for its vintage look at the 2020 SAG Awards.
