Jeff Bezos’ Family Office Invests Exclusively in Artificial Intelligence: Here’s What You Need to Know

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been making headlines recently for his extravagant purchases, but his biggest investment spree may actually be in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). According to exclusive data provided by FINTRX, all of the investments made this year by Bezos’ family office, Bezos Expeditions, have been in AI. While the exact amounts invested have not been disclosed, Bezos Expeditions has participated in funding rounds totaling over $1 billion.

In January, Bezos invested in Perplexity AI, an AI-powered search engine company, in a Series B round worth $73.6 million. Just a few months later, in April, he followed up with a $63 million investment in the same company. The value of his initial investment likely doubled by April, as Perplexity AI’s valuation soared to between $2.5 billion and $3 billion. This highlights the rapid growth and potential of AI technologies.

In February, Bezos Expeditions invested in Figure AI, a humanoid-robot company that also counts Nvidia and Microsoft as investors. This venture round amounted to $675 million, further demonstrating Bezos’ interest in cutting-edge AI technologies.

More recently, in July, Bezos participated in a $300 million Series A round for Skild AI, a company focused on developing AI systems for machines and robotics devices. This investment further solidifies Bezos’ commitment to the AI industry.

Bezos Expeditions has always had a strong focus on technology, with 70% of its investments in the tech sector, according to FINTRX. Consumer goods make up 16% of its investments, followed by financial services and manufacturing at 13% each. However, AI has emerged as Bezos’ primary area of interest.

In a podcast interview earlier this year, Bezos expressed his belief that AI tools are not just inventions, but discoveries that will have a profound impact on technology and society as a whole. He sees these powerful tools as more likely to help and save us than to harm or destroy us.

Bezos is not alone in his enthusiasm for AI. According to the UBS Global Family Office Report, AI is currently the favorite investment category for family offices. A staggering 78% of family offices surveyed plan to invest in AI in the next few years, making it the most popular category.

Even Amazon, the company Bezos founded, is heavily investing in AI. They plan to invest over $100 billion in data centers over the next decade and have already invested $4 billion in Anthropic, an AI safety and research firm. This further illustrates the widespread recognition of the potential of AI technologies.

Bezos recently filed a stock-sale plan to sell another $5 billion worth of Amazon shares this year, adding to the $8 billion worth he sold earlier. With over $13 billion in cash, Bezos will have even more resources to fuel his AI investments.

In conclusion, Jeff Bezos’ recent investment spree in artificial intelligence through his family office, Bezos Expeditions, highlights his belief in the transformative power of AI technologies. His investments in companies like Perplexity AI, Figure AI, and Skild AI demonstrate his commitment to advancing the field. Bezos is not alone in his enthusiasm, as AI is now the favored investment category for family offices worldwide. With Amazon also heavily investing in AI, the future of this technology looks promising.
