Marc Happel: From Costume Design to Fashion Collaboration

Marc Happel, the costume director of the New York City Ballet (NYCB), has had a unique journey that combines both costume design and fashion. In 2006, Happel was appointed as the NYCB costume director. Four years later, the ballet’s annual fundraiser, the Fall Fashion Gala, started inviting fashion designers to create costumes for the event.

The Birth of a Collaboration

The idea to involve fashion designers in the NYCB’s Fall Fashion Gala came from Peter Martins, the ballet’s then-master-in-chief, and Sarah Jessica Parker, a longtime NYCB donor and “Sex and the City” actor. They saw an opportunity to harness the creativity and experimentation of the fashion industry and bring it into the world of ballet.

The first designer to participate in this collaboration was Valentino Garavani, who was invited by Martins himself. After retiring from his own label, Valentino worked closely with Happel to design costumes for three performances, including a dance choreographed by Martins in honor of Valentino.

A Successful Partnership

Happel described working with Valentino as an amazing experience. The designer showed great attention to detail and spent two hours a day in the ballet costume shop during the design process. His involvement prompted him to tap into his design skills once again.

Since Valentino’s participation, the NYCB has continued to partner with renowned fashion designers for its Fall Fashion Gala. Happel has collaborated with over 30 famous designers, including Virgil Abloh, Carolina Herrera, Thom Browne, Prabal Gurung, Giles Deacon (twice), and Sarah Burton.

Couture Costumes and Celebrating Milestones

Under Happel’s direction, the NYCB costume team has created couture gowns and monochromatic tutus using materials such as tulle, lace, duchess satin, crystals, and feathers. The collaboration between high fashion and ballet has resulted in visually stunning performances that showcase the artistry of both industries.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the collaboration and the 75th anniversary of the NYCB, Happel has written a book titled “New York City Ballet: Choreography & Couture.” The book explores the intersection of fashion and ballet, showcasing the incredible designs and performances that have come out of this unique partnership.

Marc Happel’s journey from flipping through fashion books to collaborating with top designers is a testament to the power of creative partnerships. Through the NYCB’s Fall Fashion Gala, the worlds of fashion and ballet continue to merge, creating unforgettable performances that push the boundaries of both art forms.
