Brazen Mail Thief Caught on Camera Stealing from Houston Office Building

Office Building in Houston Experiences Mail Theft

An office building in northwest Houston recently fell victim to a mail theft incident, with the owner capturing the incident on surveillance cameras. The footage, recorded on July 3, shows a man wearing a green shirt approaching the mailboxes at the building on West 34th Street just before 5:30 a.m. After briefly disappearing from view, he reappears with a backpack full of stolen mail.

The following day, the man returns to the building, still wearing the same shirt. This time, the video shows him holding an object in his hand as he tampered with the mailboxes. Impressively, he manages to work on eight boxes simultaneously before leaving with more stolen mail. According to attorney Larry Longer, the owner of the building, it seems that the perpetrator had access to a master key, allowing him to open and steal from all the mailboxes effortlessly.

Concerned about the safety and security of his tenants, Longer promptly reported the incident to both the Houston Police Department (HPD) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. While HPD confirmed receiving the surveillance footage, they were unable to confirm whether investigators had viewed it yet. To protect his tenants from further potential thefts, Longer has warned them against leaving outgoing mail in the mailboxes. Instead, he has made arrangements for all incoming mail to be brought directly to his office. He and his team will then take the responsibility of distributing the mail to each tenant individually.

Although Longer is unsure if he or his law firm had any mail stolen, he remains vigilant and is keeping a close eye on his bank accounts. With multiple bank accounts and numerous checks to track, he wants to ensure that all transactions are legitimate and authorized. The incident serves as a reminder for individuals and businesses alike to monitor their financial accounts closely in such situations and report any suspicious activity promptly.

Mail theft is a serious offense that can lead to various consequences for both the victims and the perpetrators. According to recent studies, mail theft incidents have been on the rise in many parts of the country. The stolen mail often contains sensitive information, including financial and personal details, making it a lucrative target for criminals.

To combat this growing problem, there are several measures individuals and businesses can take to increase the security of their mail. Experts recommend the use of locked mailboxes or secure drop-off locations, such as post office boxes. Additionally, promptly collecting mail and avoiding leaving it unattended for long periods can significantly reduce the risk of theft. It’s also advisable to shred any documents containing personal information before discarding them.

In conclusion, the recent mail theft incident at a northwest Houston office building highlights the importance of mail security. Building owners and tenants must remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from potential thefts. By implementing security measures and promptly reporting any suspicious activity, individuals can help prevent further incidents and mitigate the risks associated with mail theft.
