Investigation Launched into Potential “Loss of Motive Power” in Jeep Wrangler 4xe Vehicles

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into a potential “loss of motive power” in more than 94,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles. This comes after receiving complaints that were outside the scope of an earlier recall involving an engine shutdown condition in the same SUV model.

In November 2022, the NHTSA issued a recall for nearly 63,000 model year 2021–2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles equipped with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle engine. The recall was prompted by concerns that these vehicles could experience engine shutdown, leading to a sudden loss of motive power while driving. Owners were provided with a calibration software update as a remedy.

However, despite the remedy provided, additional complaints have continued to surface. The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has identified 68 owner reports alleging a loss of motor power in Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles ranging from model years 2021 to 2024. These reports include both vehicles that had already received the remedy for the 2022 recall and those that were not initially included.

While the current rate of reports is higher among the “out of scope” Wranglers, the NHTSA estimates that a total of 94,275 model year 2021–2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles could be affected. It is important to note that all vehicles covered by the 2022 recall are now part of the ongoing investigation.

Stellantis, the owner of Jeep, has assured that they are cooperating with the NHTSA throughout the investigation. This is not the first recall that Jeep Wrangler 4xe owners have faced in recent years. In November 2023, Stellantis announced a recall of over 32,000 of these hybrid SUVs due to a potential fire risk.

The NHTSA’s investigation into the “loss of motive power” in Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles highlights the importance of addressing potential safety issues promptly and effectively. While recalls are designed to provide remedies, it is crucial for manufacturers to ensure that these remedies adequately address the reported problems. Vehicle owners rely on the safety and reliability of their vehicles, and any issues that compromise these aspects can have serious consequences.

As the investigation progresses, it is essential for Jeep and other automakers to prioritize the safety of their customers. In addition to providing effective remedies for known issues, it is crucial for manufacturers to conduct thorough testing and quality assurance measures to prevent such problems from occurring in the first place.

Owners of affected Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles should stay informed about the progress of the investigation and follow any instructions provided by the NHTSA or Jeep. It is advisable to contact a local Jeep dealership or authorized service center for assistance and further information.

In conclusion, the NHTSA’s investigation into the potential “loss of motive power” in Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing safety concerns promptly and thoroughly. Vehicle owners should remain vigilant and proactive when it comes to recalls and potential safety issues, ensuring the well-being of themselves and others on the road.
