“Preparations Underway for Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Charles River Esplanade”

Preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Charles River Esplanade. As the event draws nearer, crews are working tirelessly to ensure a seamless experience for attendees. From setting up microphones and testing equipment to conducting sound checks, every detail is being meticulously addressed. One crucial aspect of the performance is the iconic cannons that accompany the Pops’ rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. These cannons, some of which are several hundred years old and quite valuable, arrived at the Esplanade on Wednesday morning.

To protect the delicate instruments from the elements, the orchestra decided to practice inside Symphony Hall before their dress rehearsal at the Hatch Shell. The sun’s intense heat and humidity can have adverse effects on the instruments, leading to potential damage. John Demick, the Boston Pops Stage Manager, explained, “We’ll have violinists and cellists covering instruments with towels so they don’t open up because of heat and humidity.” This precautionary measure ensures that the musicians can deliver an outstanding performance without any hindrances.

Meanwhile, military personnel conducted a dry run of how the ceremonial cannons will be fired during the event. Lieutenant Peter Senatore, an artillery officer, expressed his excitement about being part of this long-standing tradition. “I’ve been watching this ever since I was a little kid. Ever since I saw the guns, I always wanted to be part of this,” he shared.

Aside from the cannons, other preparations are also underway on the Esplanade. Bomb-sniffing K9s are diligently checking vendor trucks entering the area, ensuring a safe environment for everyone. Barricades have been set up, seats have been arranged, and lights illuminate the surroundings. However, security remains a top priority. All entrances will undergo bag checks and screenings as part of extensive security measures. Attendees are reminded not to bring bicycles, grills, alcohol, or firearms.

In terms of entertainment, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular promises to deliver an unforgettable experience. Conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops have been preparing alongside a lineup of talented musical guests. Tony Award-winning actress Kelli O’Hara, who has previously performed with the Pops, expressed her excitement about playing at the Hatch Shell for the first time. “I’ve done the 4th of July here, so I was waiting for the call and glad I received it,” she shared.

Joining Kelli O’Hara on stage will be the country and rock band The Mavericks, iconic singer Darlene Love from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Singing Sergeants from the U.S. Air Force Band. Lockhart, who has been leading the Boston Pops for 29 years, teased some surprises for the audience. “I can’t tell you any more surprises because then they wouldn’t be surprises,” he playfully remarked. These unexpected moments are sure to add an extra layer of excitement to an already spectacular show.

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is a free event open to the public. However, due to expected traffic congestion and limited parking, organizers strongly recommend using public transportation. To facilitate this, all MBTA trains, buses, ferries, and the Commuter Rail will be free after 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.

As the countdown to the event continues, anticipation is building among both organizers and attendees. The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will not only be broadcast on 7NEWS but also produced by and aired on Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg Radio. With such extensive coverage, viewers from all around can experience the magic of this beloved tradition. So, mark your calendars and get ready for a night filled with dazzling fireworks and exceptional musical performances.
