The Mets’ Turnaround: Francisco Alvarez’s Impact on the Team

The Mets have experienced a significant turnaround in recent weeks, and one of the key factors contributing to their success is the return of Francisco Alvarez. Prior to his stint on the injured list due to surgery on his left thumb, the Mets had won 20 out of 23 games with Alvarez in the lineup.

Carlos Mendoza, a member of the Mets coaching staff, praised Alvarez for his impact on the team. Mendoza highlighted Alvarez’s ability to understand the pitching staff and his leadership qualities. He emphasized that Alvarez has taken charge of the pitching staff and has been instrumental in shutting down the opposing team’s running game.

Alvarez has also made a significant impact on the Mets’ offense. Mendoza noted that he makes the lineup much deeper and has been producing consistently. In his last seven games, Alvarez went 12-for-24 with three doubles, two home runs, six walks, and an impressive OPS of 1.475.

Kodai Senga, a right-handed pitcher, is expected to throw live batting practice against minor leaguers at Citi Field. He expressed his hope to begin a minor league rehab assignment soon after being sidelined for the entire season with a strained shoulder.

Mark Vientos, another player on the Mets roster, credited Carlos Beltran for his approach in a recent two-homer game against Gerrit Cole. Beltran had a conversation with Vientos during their time in Chicago and advised him to utilize his opposite-field power. Beltran emphasized the importance of understanding one’s strengths as a hitter and utilizing them effectively.

In addition to Alvarez’s success, Brett Baty, another young third baseman in the organization, hit two more home runs with Triple-A Syracuse. Baty has been performing well at the Triple-A level and has been making a strong case for a promotion to the majors. On the other hand, Vientos, who initially lost the battle for the Opening Day third base spot, has been impressive since his recall on May 15.

Despite the challenges posed by Yankees’ right-hander Luis Gil, Mendoza made the decision to start Tyrone Taylor in right field. This choice was made to counter Gil’s effectiveness against both right and left-handed hitters.

Overall, the return of Francisco Alvarez has been a significant factor in the Mets’ recent success. His leadership, offensive contributions, and impact on the pitching staff have played a crucial role in the team’s turnaround. Additionally, the performances of players like Brett Baty and Mark Vientos in the minor leagues have added to the depth of talent within the organization.
